About a week ago, Laura and I packed some bags and took a taxi to St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The baby’s original due date had been 4 August, so when we checked into the hospital, we were already fifteen days late and Laura had agreed with her midwifery practice that it was time to induce labor. Roughly thirty hours later, Laura gave birth to our beautiful, gorgeous baby girl: Thuy Esme Holder-Vinh at 4:21a on Friday, 21 August. Find out more about her, and see more pictures, at www.thuy.me.

I was really feeling sorry for myself for having to put on my winter boots in order to make it through the snowstorm and cold weather to get to work yesterday. And then, right there in front of The New York Times building, was a reminder of how thoroughly pampered and just plain soft I am: at least I got to wake up hours later than the woman running this coffee and pastry cart, and at least I don’t have to spend my workday beneath the flimsy protection from the elements that her cart provides, and at least it’s warm enough inside my office for me to take off my coat. In retrospect, I really should have bought a cup of coffee from her that morning.

It took me a while to figure out what my photographic ‘style’ is, but in the past six months or so I think I’ve settled on a particular visual language that makes sense for me. In contrast to the wide-ranging and rather aimless fiddling that I did with my camera the first few years I had it, these days I find myself looking for some very specific qualities: elevation views, people in profile, perpendicular geometry, and flattened space.

Just a few minutes ago, some of my colleagues noticed a line forming out in front of the Times Building. People are queuing up to buy already scarce copies of today’s newspaper, presumably as mementos of the historic election of Barack Obama to the office of President of the United States.
